You can grow tomatoes in containers almost anywhere. A sunny patio, balcony, or even a sunny windowsill will work. Containers are also great for small spaces.
Growing tomatoes in containers gives you complete control. You choose the soil and the fertilizer. This helps you grow the healthiest plants.
Container gardening is a fun project for the whole family. Kids love to help plant, water, and watch the tomatoes grow. It's a great way to teach kids about where their food comes from.
You don't need a lot of fancy equipment to start a container garden. Here are the basics. First, you'll need a container.
Choose a container that is at least 12 inches wide and deep. Make sure it has drainage holes. Next, you'll need potting mix.
Do not use garden soil. Potting mix is specially formulated for containers. Tomatoes need support as they grow.
You will need stakes or a tomato cage. A trowel is helpful for filling the container with potting mix. A watering can with a gentle rose will water the plants evenly.
Finally, don't forget your tomato plant. Choose a healthy plant from a local garden center. There are many different varieties of tomatoes.
Some are better suited for containers than others. Determinate tomatoes are a good choice for containers. These plants stay smaller and produce fruit all at once.
Indeterminate tomatoes can get very large and need lots of space. Cherry tomatoes and other small varieties are also good for containers. They produce a lot of fruit in a small space.
Choose a container that is the right size for your tomato plant. Bigger containers dry ( out less quickly than smaller ones. Make sure your container has drainage holes.
Tomatoes don't like to sit in water. Once you have your container, potting mix, and tomato plant, you're ready to plant. Fill the container with potting mix.
Leave about two inches of space at the top. Make a hole in the center of the potting mix. The hole should be the same size as the pot your tomato came in.
Gently remove the tomato plant from its pot. Loosen the roots around the edges. Place the tomato plant in the hole.
Fill in around the roots with potting mix. Water your tomato plant deeply. Be sure to water the entire root zone.
Let the excess water drain out of the bottom of the container. Place your container in a sunny spot. Tomatoes need at least six hours of sunlight each day.
Water your tomato plant regularly and fertilize it every few weeks. Now you can sit back and watch your tomato plant grow.
