Can you grow corn on the cob hydroponically?
The answer is a definitely yes! You can grow most vegetables hydroponically. When I was doing research for a video or an article on growing corn hydroponically I found the subject with very little data. I did find a video on Youtube.com with a grower who had successfully grown corn hydroponically. The real info I was looking for was what type of hydroponic system could I build to achieve the goal of growing corn on the cob hydroponically.
The only video that I could find was corn growing in a flood and drain table in other words a Ebb & Flo hydroponic system.
The flood and drain table was definitely a system that would work, but I was looking for something more on a smaller scale. I decided to build my own system that would better suit my needs. I decide to build my system using rain gutters. I have built hydroponic systems before using a rain gutter and had success with this type of system. Plus the materials for the system can be purchased at the local hardware store and the cost for the material are very reasonable for my budget.
The basic design for this system is on the simple side. I built a frame on a slope to house the two rain gutters. I used a tote for the reservoir with two pumps. One pump sends water with nutrients up a pvc pipe with two elbow outlets sending the water down the two rain gutters. The second pump sends water up a pvc pipe with individual tube flowing into each three inch net pots. The reason why I used three inch net pots is because the clip into the rain guter nicely. I have the system on a timer that goes off every hour for fifteen minutes. I also started a frame to support the corn as is grows tall. I use complete crop 9-5-15 nutrients because I have had plenty of success with this product.
